Introductory Board Games

One of the best things about board games is that anyone can play. All you need is some time and some people to play with! When bringing in friends and family to share your new hobby, most people have no idea where to start.

Here are some games that the Lab Assistants think are great to get people started in tabletop board gaming.

These games are easy to learn, take around an hour to complete and nobody gets eliminated so everyone gets to keep having fun to the very end!

Carcassonne by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede

Draw a tile, play the tile, maybe place a meeple. Carcassone features easy to learn rules with little set up time. This makes the game easy to teach with minimal downtime between turns and each individual game doesn’t take long to play.

Ticket to Ride by Alan R. Moon

At its core Ticket to Ride is choosing between 3 actions: claim a train route, collect train cards or gather destination ticket. Each decision has its own strategic implications with questions that impact future decisions. Which colour train do you take? Which route? Risk big payoff tickets or keep smaller, safer point destinations?

So simple it’s perfect even for children but has enough depth for even veteran board gamers.

Settlers of Catan Box Art

Settlers of Catan by Klaus Teuber

Settlers of Catan is one of the most popular games on this list and for good reason. It features a high level of player interaction but in a non-confrontational way. This player interaction is key to having fun in any game. As well as this interaction, it introduces players to resource management, trading and the victory point mechanic seen in many other games.

Any one of these games will be perfect to start off yourself and your friends on an exciting new hobby! All of these games are in the Board Games Library at Games Laboratory and our staff would be more than happy to take you through the basics, so come in and check them out!

Warhammer 40’000 Conquest at Games Laboratory

Warhammer 40’000 Conquest has arrived at the Games Laboratory!

With our Conquest Store Championships on the 22 February we will be holding fortnightly tournaments starting from Sunday 4 January 2015. Prize support will be Season Kits until we run out and then store credit/other awesome prizes!

We look forward to see you all in the grim dark future at Games Laboratory!
